Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District - Bridge Lead Abatement & Painting

The massive 435,000-square-foot Chesapeake Bay Bridge project required lead abatement and recoating, but first we had to establish floating plants from which to base our work activities.

Due to the environmental sensitivity of the area, we also took elaborate measures in removing the existing lead-based coatings to eliminate emissions, minimize waste generation, and contain and dispose of lead-based waste. We designed and utilized a steel grit recycling system, and developed a custom rigging, staged from barges and hoisted into place via pneumatic winches.

In addition, the severe Chesapeake Bay weather conditions offered challenges that could only be overcome by the shear determination of our crew.
